Spring 2011 Plug-fest for IEEE 1588 Industry

March 30, 2011

Packet based synchronization based on the IEEE 1588-2008 standard is increasingly becoming the technology of choice for large scale deployments of synchronized networks. The industry have since five years actively been working together to ensure reliability, interoperability and performance for their customers.

One or two times per year there are industry gatherings to this topic. The Institut Industrial IT (inIT) of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University and the Fraunhofer Competence Center Industrial Automation (IOSB-INA)  are hosting the industry plugfest in Lemgo, Germany – the first 1588 Spring Plug-fest. As independent organizations, inIT and Fraunhofer are committed to neutral testing of open standards technology and the lab’s plugfests allow participating companies to test their devices and identify interoperability and performance issues early, speeding go to market time for products. Working together, the participants can decrease research and development and quality assurance expenses, reduce product time to market and drive the industry acceptance of a technology. The German time and frequency company Meinberg help organize the work and test procedures this time.

Conemtech will participate with a number of Grandmaster and slave products to complement the 20 some PTP switches from companies like ABB, Moxa, Siemens , Ruggedcom etc which are listed to test at this plug-fest. The IEEE 1588 Default Profile, the Power Profile (IEEE C37.238) and the Telecom profiles will be tested along with the normal interoperability and standards compliance tests. This time also the synchronization accuracy and robustness are to be on a device level.
